The chill has definitely arrived here in the northeast.  It makes me shiver just thinking about it.  It’s this type of weather that makes hibernation a comfortable alternative to just about anything else. Whatever you do to stay cozy and warm this winter,

don’t forget to stay hydrated!

It is the easiest thing to do to be healthier and get more fit! Keeping your water content up will help you get the most out of your off season workouts.  Muscles are 75% water, but only if you help them to be.  Muscle injuries and loss of power are a few of the many negative impacts of letting your hydration slip.

 

It is easy to forget to drink water regularly when it’s cold outside, but this is an important time to remember.  There are many things about this time of year that contribute to drying us out faster than normal – the cold dry air, alcoholic drinks at holiday parties, the tendency to eat more cooked foods which contain less water themselves, and when it’s cold, tea or coffee seem more appealing.

Try these three things to help you stay hydrated all winter long.

1) Heat your water

Drinking plain water is a lot less appealing when you’re freezing your butt off in 25 degree weather.  Instead, opt for hot or warm water and squeeze a lemon into it for some flavor and to make a more cleansing drink. The warm water and lemon combo help detoxify your liver.

2) Get a humidifier

Reducing the amount of dry air you are exposed to can help you hold on to more of your water.  There are plenty of small, inexpensive humidifiers out there. They are easy to use and easy to clean.

3) Party smart

I always recommend alternating a glass of water with your adult beverages during your holiday socializing, but you can do even more.  Party smarter and snack on the high water content foods offered at most parties.  Hit the veggie tray and choose the cucumber, celery, cauliflower, broccoli, and tomatoes all are more than 90% water when raw.
